Aggstein Castle (Austria)

Weather…

The ruins of Aggstein Castle stand approximately 300 meters above the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau valley, perched on a narrow rocky ridge. Built in the 12th century by the Kuenring family, the fortress is considered one of Austria's most famous castle ruins and is closely tied to the history of this ministerial lineage. In the 15th century, the complex was extensively renovated and expanded under Jörg Scheck von Wald, during which time the notorious "Rose Garden" was created, a narrow rock ledge used as a prison for captives. Its strategic location allowed residents to control Danube river traffic for centuries, an activity often associated with robber knight legends. Following its decay in the 17th century, the ruins were secured in the 19th century amidst the castle romanticism movement. Today, Aggstein is a prominent tourist destination within the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau region, offering insights into medieval defensive architecture, a chapel, and a knight's hall.
