Aggstein Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Aggstein castle ruins are spectacularly perched on a narrow rocky ridge about 300 meters above the Danube in the Wachau valley. Founded in the 12th century by Manegold von Acchstein, the fortress was expanded under the Kuenringers into an almost impregnable robber baron castle. Particularly notorious is the so-called 'Rosengärtlein' (Little Rose Garden), a narrow rocky ledge where prisoners were left to starve or choose death by jumping into the abyss. In the 15th century, Jörg Scheck von Wald had the castle rebuilt after it had previously been destroyed. The architecture is striking for its adaptation to the extremely rugged terrain, with the chapel and the knight's hall being among the best-preserved parts. Since the 17th century, the site fell increasingly into decay until it was secured and revitalized for tourism in the 20th century. Today, Aggstein is considered one of Lower Austria's most visited attractions, offering insights into medieval life and an impressive panorama over the Wachau World Heritage site.
