Neulengbach is tucked away in the hilly landscape of the Vienna Woods, about 35 kilometers west of Vienna. The town is dominated by the prominent Neulengbach Castle, a fortification founded in the 12th century and later expanded into a representative Renaissance palace. Neulengbach is particularly famous for its connection to the expressionist painter Egon Schiele, who lived here between 1911 and 1912. His stay ended tragically with a brief imprisonment at the local district court, an event that significantly influenced his work. Today, the Schiele Memorial can be visited within the historic court building. Architecturally, the town provides a characterful mix of Baroque houses and the Biedermeier style typical of the region. Its location on the Westbahn railway and proximity to the A1 motorway make Neulengbach an important transport hub and a popular residence for commuters. Nature enthusiasts appreciate the numerous hiking and cycling trails in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve, which start right at the doorstep. Economically, the town functions as a regional service center with a well-developed social infrastructure and educational facilities, highlighting its status as a market town with urban flair.
