Rothenstein Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Rothenstein castle ruins are hidden in the dense forests above the Danube in the Wachau, near the village of Rossatz-Arnsdorf. The complex was built in the 12th century by the Arnsdorf family and served as a defensive retreat and border fortification. Characteristic of Rothenstein is the use of reddish rock for parts of the masonry, which likely gave the castle its name. The architecture of the ruin still shows the remains of a square keep and parts of the once mighty curtain wall that enclosed the inner courtyard. Throughout history, the castle was often the subject of ownership disputes between the Diocese of Passau and local noble lords. Since it was off the main paths and difficult to access, it was neglected as early as the late Middle Ages and fell increasingly into decay. Hikers who brave the arduous climb to the ruins are rewarded with a mystical atmosphere and an unadulterated insight into a medieval defense system that has been reclaimed by nature.
