Shamkir lies in western Azerbaijan on the northern shore of the Shamkir Reservoir at around four hundred metres altitude and looks back on a remarkably multicultural history. In 1819 Württemberg Swabians settled here and founded the colony of Annenfeld, whose Lutheran church from 1909 still stands today as a city landmark. The German settlers introduced viticulture and modern agricultural techniques that have shaped the region ever since. Today Shamkir is a significant centre for greenhouse tomato production, olive cultivation and the wine industry. Two large reservoirs along the Kura River provide electricity and host water sports. Shamkir is also known internationally as a chess centre: since 2014 it has repeatedly hosted high-profile grandmaster tournaments such as Shamkir Chess, attended by top players including Magnus Carlsen and other world-elite competitors.
