Located in the mountainous Dashkasan region of western Azerbaijan, it forms the backbone of the national metallurgical industry. Industrial development began in the mid-20th century, with production officially commencing in 1954. The ore is characterized by a high iron content and is primarily extracted through open-pit mining. For decades, Dashkasan supplied the steel mills in Rustavi, Georgia; today, it is the main source for Azerbaijani steel production, particularly for the Baku Steel Company. Estimated reserves amount to several hundred million tons, ensuring long-term exploitation. The region benefits significantly from mining activities, which require a complex infrastructure of processing plants and transport routes. Current modernization plans aim to increase the depth of local processing to provide high-quality raw materials for the construction and defense industries.
