Alazani River (Georgia)

Weather…

The Alazani is the most important river in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia and one of the most significant tributaries of the Kura (Mtkvari). With a total length of 351 kilometers, it originates on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus and flows through the fertile Alazani Valley, known as the center of Georgian winemaking. The river forms a long section of the natural border between Georgia and Azerbaijan before flowing into the Mingachevir reservoir. The Alazani Valley is climatically favored, providing well-suited conditions for the cultivation of grapes and other agricultural products. Historically, the river was often the scene of border disputes, but today it is primarily important for the irrigation of vast vineyards. In winter, the river rarely freezes, while in spring it swells significantly due to snowmelt in the Caucasus. The banks of the Alazani are lined in places by riparian forests, which are important retreats for local fauna.
