San José de Tilcara (Argentina)

Weather…

San José de Tilcara is located at an elevation of 2,465 meters in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage valley. The primary historical site is the Pucará de Tilcara, a pre-Inca fortress built on a hill overlooking the Río Grande. At the base of the restored ruins, visitors can walk through a botanical garden dedicated to high-altitude cactus species. The Dr. Eduardo Casanova Archaeological Museum in the town center displays artifacts from various pre-Hispanic Andean cultures. The municipal market is a hub for woven textiles, pottery, and traditional regional cuisine, including llama meat, tamales, and quinoa-based dishes. The local Carnival celebrations in February and March are among the most recognized in northern Argentina. The town is reached via Ruta Nacional 9 from the provincial capital, San Salvador de Jujuy. The dry, temperate climate makes spring and autumn the most practical seasons for outdoor activities, such as hiking the trail to the Garganta del Diablo, a deep gorge and waterfall located outside the town.
