Quilmes is a major industrial and historic city located within the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area, along the shores of the Río de la Plata. Its history began in 1666 when the Spanish colonial authorities established a reduction for the Quilmes indigenous people, who were forcibly relocated there from Tucumán after a long resistance. Over centuries, this settlement evolved into a powerhouse of Argentine industry. The city is internationally famous for the Quilmes Brewery, founded in 1888 by German immigrant Otto Bemberg, which produces Argentina's most iconic beer. The urban landscape features the neoclassical Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and preserved industrial architecture. Today, Quilmes serves as a significant educational hub, home to the National University of Quilmes and several technical institutes. Despite its massive growth and modern infrastructure, the city maintains a strong community identity rooted in its unique colonial origins and industrial heritage.
