Lago Puelo is a small town in the northwest of the Chubut province, located just a few kilometers from the Chilean border. Situated in a glacial valley at an elevation of only 200 meters, the area benefits from a unique microclimate. Winters are milder here than in the rest of the Patagonian Andes, allowing lush vegetation to thrive in the adjacent Lago Puelo National Park. The turquoise waters of Lake Puelo serve as the primary focus for recreation. Visitors can book boat excursions that navigate across the lake to the Chilean border, or hike trails such as the path to the Pitranto Grande viewpoint. The national park protects a rare section of Valdivian temperate rainforest, which crossed into the eastern slopes of the Andes due to the low-altitude mountain passes. Agriculture in the valley specializes in fine berries, including cherries, raspberries, and boysenberries, which are processed into local jams and liqueurs. Driven by local hop farms, Lago Puelo has also emerged as a significant hub for Patagonian craft beer production. Connected by Provincial Route 16, the town is a primary summer destination for hiking and botanical observation.
