El Bolsón
El Bolsón is a lush, valley town in Río Negro Province, tucked away between the imposing Andes mountains and the deep forests of the Patagonian Andean footprint. Known as the "Ecological Municipality," the town gained fame in the 1970s when it became a haven for the Argentine hippie movement, drawn by its fertile lands and peaceful, off-the-grid lifestyle. Today, it retains a distinct bohemian charm and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The heart of El Bolsón's culture is its renowned artisan market, held in the main square, where locals sell handcrafted jewelry, woodwork, and organic produce. The microclimate of the valley makes it exceptionally fertile, supporting widespread cultivation of berries, cherries, and most notably, hops, which supply the region's thriving craft beer industry. Visitors can tour local breweries and berry farms directly. Outdoor enthusiasts flock here for world-class trekking to a vast network of mountain refuges, such as the Cajón del Azul, known for its crystalline river pools. The nearby Puelo Lake National Park provides further exploration opportunities. Summer and early autumn (December to April) are the best times to visit to enjoy the lively markets, outdoor trails, and the annual Hops Festival.
