Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park (Chile)

Weather…

Established in 1926, Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is the oldest national park in Chile and a cornerstone of the country's protected areas. Located in the Los Lagos Region, it encompasses approximately 253,780 hectares of rugged Andean terrain and is part of the Temperate Rainforests of the Southern Andes Biosphere Reserve. The park is dominated by the majestic Osorno Volcano, standing at 2,652 meters, and the deep blue waters of Todos los Santos Lake, often called the Emerald Lake. A key geographical feature is the Petrohué Falls, where the river cascades through chutes of volcanic basalt formed by ancient lava flows. The vegetation consists largely of Valdivian temperate rainforest, providing a habitat for diverse fauna such as the pudu and the monito del monte. It serves as a vital center for outdoor recreation and scientific study of glaciology and volcanic activity in the Southern Cone.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park is easily accessible from Puerto Varas or Ensenada via well-maintained roads. Driving alongside the lake features truly spectacular views, and buses run regularly directly to the most important attractions within the park area.
📅
Best season
The summer months between December and March are the most popular, as the weather is warmer and clearer for viewing the volcano in its full glory. Autumn often brings fewer crowds alongside beautifully colored, scenic forest backdrops.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area gives a mix of volcanic sand, vast ash fields near the volcano, and lush forest trails by the waterfalls. The paths are mostly in good condition, though they can become quite steep and challenging on the slopes of the volcano.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable hiking footwear and layered clothing are highly advisable due to the varying elevations. A rain jacket should be packed even during the summer months, and sturdy hiking socks are very helpful for walks on volcanic terrain.
🅿️
Parking
Sufficient parking spaces are normally available at the main attractions, such as the impressive waterfalls and the volcano's visitor center. During the peak summer tourist season, however, you might experience some minor congestion.
⚠️
Safety
There is a noticeable risk of slipping on the volcanic soils, especially when they are wet. When viewing the rushing waterfalls, railings should always be strictly respected and the secured observation platforms must never be abandoned.
⏱️
Time needed
A visit to the majestic waterfalls and a trip to the base of the volcano can be comfortably completed in a half to full day. For a more demanding ascent of the volcano itself, however, you will need to plan significantly more time.
