Caviahue
Caviahue is a tranquil mountain village positioned within a striking caldera in Neuquén Province, surrounded by ancient Araucaria (monkey puzzle tree) forests and dominated by the active Copahue Volcano. Sitting at an altitude of over 1,600 meters on the shores of Lake Caviahue, the town has a surreal landscape where volcanic rock formations meet pristine glacial waters. The local geography creates a unique microclimate in this remote section of the Andes. The area is a dual-season destination with highly distinct profiles. In winter, Caviahue transforms into a boutique ski resort renowned for excellent dry powder snow and uncrowded slopes, allowing skiers to glide through centuries-old forests. In the summer, the snowpack recedes, making it a paradise for hiking, horseback riding, and exploring numerous hidden waterfalls scattered across the volcanic terrain. Just a short drive away lies Copahue, globally famous for its therapeutic hot springs and sulfurous mud baths directly heated by the volcano. The indigenous Mapuche culture heavily influences local traditions and names. The best time to visit depends entirely on whether visitors seek winter sports (July to September) or summer trekking and thermal wellness (December to April).
