Villa Pehuenia
Villa Pehuenia is a small Andean village located on the northern shores of Lake Aluminé. The landscape is dominated by dense forests of araucaria trees, also known as monkey puzzle trees, which are native to this specific region of Patagonia. The town is deeply connected to the local Mapuche community, the Puel, who manage many of the local tourist services. During the winter months, the nearby Batea Mahuida volcano operates as a family-friendly snow park run entirely by the Mapuche community. In the summer, the crystal-clear waters of the lakes attract visitors for kayaking, fishing, and boat tours. The sandy beaches along the lake shore offer a surprisingly mild environment for relaxation. The local gastronomy heavily features the piñón, the seed of the araucaria tree, which is used to make flour, alfajores, and various savory dishes. Access to the town usually requires driving along unpaved mountain roads, either from the city of Zapala or crossing the nearby border from Chile.
