Aluminé
Aluminé is situated in the western Neuquén province along the banks of the Aluminé River. The town serves as the hub of the Pehuenia Circuit and is surrounded by dense forests of Araucaria (monkey puzzle) trees, ancient conifers that have grown in the region for millennia. Local Mapuche communities maintain strong ties to the land, cultivating traditional crops and selling woven textiles in the town. The Aluminé River is ranked among the top destinations in Patagonia for whitewater rafting and kayaking, having hosted the World Rafting Championship in 2018. Surrounding hiking trails, such as those leading to Lake Quillén in the Lanín National Park, provide clear views of glaciated peaks. Several ranches (estancias) in the river valleys organize multi-day horseback riding expeditions through the pre-cordillera terrain. Regional cooking relies heavily on the edible seeds of the Araucaria tree (piñón), which are milled into flour to make breads, alfajores, and savory stews. Standard Patagonian dishes, including grilled lamb and fresh trout, are also widely available. The town is connected via Provincial Route 23. The warmer months from December to March provide the safest conditions for river navigation and alpine trekking.
