Pogradec Fortress (Albania)

Weather…

Pogradec Fortress, also known as the Encheleidi Fortress, stands on a prominent hill rising about 205 meters above Lake Ohrid. Its origins trace back to the 5th century BC, when it was established by the Illyrian tribe of the Encheleids as a strategic defensive outpost. The fortress played a vital role in controlling trade routes along the path of the future Via Egnatia and provided a safe haven for the local population. During the 4th century BC, under the Illyrian kings, the site was significantly expanded and strengthened with stone fortifications. Archaeological excavations have revealed three distinct layers of settlement, spanning from the Iron Age through Late Antiquity and into the early Middle Ages. The fortress was largely destroyed during the Slavic invasions of the 6th century AD, after which its military importance declined. Today, visitors can explore the foundations of the perimeter walls and remains of residential structures, while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of Lake Ohrid and the surrounding mountain ranges.
