Rrajca Nature Reserve (Albania)

Weather…

The Rrajca Nature Reserve is located in eastern Albania within the Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage of Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests since 2017. The Rrajca region is renowned for its spectacular high-mountain landscapes, featuring numerous glacial lakes situated in karst basins at altitudes exceeding 1,800 meters. The reserve protects primary beech forests that extend in an extreme vertical gradient up to the timberline. These forests provide an essential sanctuary for the critically endangered Balkan lynx, of which only a few dozen individuals remain across the entire region. In addition to the forests, the alpine meadows above the treeline are botanically significant, hosting numerous endemic plant species. The local geology is defined by limestone and silicate rocks, resulting in diverse soil compositions and vegetation patterns. The area serves as a vital watershed for the Shkumbin River. Due to strict conservation regulations, human activity in the reserve is kept to a minimum, ensuring the preservation of its biological integrity.
