Librazhd is located in eastern Albania within the Shkumbin River valley, serving as a vital transit point on the highway connecting Elbasan to the North Macedonian border. Surrounded by formidable mountain ranges, the town is the primary gateway to the Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park, one of Albania's most ecologically significant areas and part of the European Green Belt. Librazhd was formally established as a city in 1960 and grew as a hub for iron-nickel mining and timber processing during the socialist era. The surrounding wilderness is characterized by exceptional biodiversity, providing a habitat for the rare Balkan lynx. Today, the local economy is transitioning towards agriculture, small-scale manufacturing, and nature-based tourism. Its location along the ancient Via Egnatia route underscores the historical importance of the region as a bridge between the coast and the interior.
