Plaošnik is an archaeological site and spiritual center of outstanding significance located on a hill overlooking Ohrid's Old Town. In 893, Saint Clement of Ohrid established the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon here and founded the Ohrid Literary School, regarded as the first Slavic university. Clement utilized this site to educate over 3,500 students in the Glagolitic and later Cyrillic scripts, establishing the region as the epicenter of Slavic enlightenment. The present-day church was reconstructed in 2002 upon the foundations of the original structure and houses the relics of Saint Clement. Excavations have revealed impressive floor mosaics from an early Christian basilica dating to the 5th and 6th centuries, along with an ancient baptistery. The site provides profound insights into early Christian art and architecture while symbolizing the birthplace of Slavic literacy. The complex's elevated position gives panoramic views of Lake Ohrid and the surrounding mountain ranges.
