The German Bridge of Amakpapé is a significant architectural relic from the era of German Togoland, which existed between 1884 and 1914. Located approximately 70 kilometers north of Lomé, the bridge spans the Haho River and was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century to improve inland connectivity. It was part of a broader infrastructure project designed to facilitate the rapid transport of export goods such as cocoa, palm oil, and cotton to the coastal ports. The bridge's massive stone pillars and durable engineering reflect the colonial ambitions of the time to establish a modern transport network in West Africa. Despite the damages suffered during World War I and the subsequent decades of use, the structure remains largely intact as a historical monument. It serves as a physical reminder of Togo's colonial history and the early industrial developments that shaped the country's current geographic and economic landscape.
