💡 Tips
- Border Protocol: As a border town, keep your identification ready at all times, even for short walks near the perimeter.
- Market Rhythm: The cross-border market is most lively on its specific cycle days; arrive by 8 AM for the best experience.
- Navigation: Shared taxis to Atakpamé gather near the central crossroads; they depart only when completely full.
- Hydration: The humidity here is intense; carry bottled water as the town's supply can be intermittent.
- Etiquette: Trade is the lifeblood here; a polite greeting in the local language (Ewe or Adja) goes a long way.
🍽 Food

Freshly caught from nearby water sources, usually served with spicy shito (pepper sauce) at evening roadside stalls.
Try the 'Adoka' variety, a refreshing local drink harvested from palm trees in the surrounding countryside.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The market provides a unique mix of Togolese and Beninese textiles, often at better prices than in larger cities.
Look for locally produced neem or palm oil soaps sold in the central trading area.

Tohoun lies at the easternmost edge of the Plateaux Region, right on the border with Benin, and is the capital of Moyen-Mono Prefecture. The town stands on the banks of the Mono River, which forms the natural boundary between Togo and Benin. With around 20,000 inhabitants, Tohoun is a traditional trading hub where Togolese and Beninese cultures intermingle: its famous market handles fabrics, foodstuffs and consumer goods from both countries. The population is predominantly Adja, an ethnic group closely related to the Adja across the border in Benin. The regional economy is built on maize, cassava, groundnuts and palm oil. Tohoun has several schools, health centres and a customs post that regulates cross-border traffic. Voodoo traditions are deeply rooted here: the Adja are regarded as one of the most important Voodoo communities of West Africa, with numerous shrines and an active ritual life centred on family ancestors and nature spirits.
