💡 Tips

  • This is the base camp for Mount Agou; hiring a local guide for the hike is highly recommended.
  • The climb is steep but thankfully shaded by cocoa and coffee trees. Start your hike early in the morning.
  • You can take a shared motorbike (zemidjan) partway up if you prefer not to hike the entire distance.
  • Check the weather before ascending, as the highest peak is frequently completely shrouded in clouds.
  • Be respectful of the local Ewe culture, especially when passing through the small mountain villages.

Small Mountain Villages

Agou - a cluster of villages including Agou-Nyogbo, Agou-Tomégbé and Agou-Iloé - clings to the steep slopes of Mount Agou (986 m), the highest peak in Togo. The town lies in Agou Prefecture, about 15 kilometres from Kpalimé, and is the country's most important coffee and cocoa-growing area. The local microclimate is markedly cooler and wetter than the coastal plain, supporting lush tropical vegetation. From the summit of Mount Agou, reachable either by vehicle or on foot, clear days offer spectacular views over neighbouring Ghana and the Volta Region. The population is predominantly Ewe and upholds traditional customs, including the annual yam harvest festival and the veneration of the mountain spirits. Economically, hiking-based ecotourism is becoming increasingly important, complemented by local cooperatives that offer fairly traded organic coffee to international buyers.
