Agou - a cluster of villages including Agou-Nyogbo, Agou-Tomégbé and Agou-Iloé - clings to the steep slopes of Mount Agou (986 m), the highest peak in Togo. The town lies in Agou Prefecture, about 15 kilometres from Kpalimé, and is the country's most important coffee and cocoa-growing area. The local microclimate is markedly cooler and wetter than the coastal plain, supporting lush tropical vegetation. From the summit of Mount Agou, reachable either by vehicle or on foot, clear days offer spectacular views over neighbouring Ghana and the Volta Region. The population is predominantly Ewe and upholds traditional customs, including the annual yam harvest festival and the veneration of the mountain spirits. Economically, hiking-based ecotourism is becoming increasingly important, complemented by local cooperatives that offer fairly traded organic coffee to international buyers.
