Badou lies in the western part of the Plateaux Region, just 25 kilometres from the Ghanaian border, and serves as the capital of Wawa Prefecture. The town nestles in the lush valley of the Asukawkaw River, surrounded by densely forested hills and steep escarpments that form one of Togo's most ecologically rich areas. Badou is nationally renowned as the heartland of coffee and cocoa cultivation: the Coopérative Centrale Café-Cacao has been processing beans from the surrounding slopes for decades. Bananas, cassava and an array of spices are also grown here. The main tourist draw is the Akloa Falls, which plunge about 35 metres into a clear natural pool roughly 5 kilometres from the town centre and are a much-loved hiking destination. The dominant Akposso people are famed for their polyphonic singing and their refined traditional medicine, with healers still consulted today by visitors from across West Africa.
