Kougnohou lies in Wawa Prefecture at the far western edge of the Plateaux Region, just 15 kilometres from the Ghanaian border. The town nestles on the gentle slopes of the Akwapim-Togo mountain range at about 350 metres above sea level. The surrounding countryside is one of the loveliest hilly landscapes in Togo, with dense forests, clear streams and small waterfalls. Kougnohou is known for cultivating high-quality cocoa, which is processed and exported by the Coopérative Centrale Café-Cacao. Coffee, bananas, cassava and avocados are also grown here. Culturally the town is closely tied to the Akposso people, whose polyphonic singing and traditional ceremonies make the region distinctive. Thanks to its proximity to Ghana, Kougnohou also plays an important role in informal cross-border trade, especially in agricultural products and fabrics. A gentle hiking-based ecotourism is gradually developing as well.
