Kéran National Park is located in northern Togo within the Savanes Region, primarily along the banks of the Oti River. Established in 1971, the park once covered over 1,600 square kilometers, though its boundaries were later adjusted due to local land-use demands. The park's environment is dominated by Sudanian savanna, featuring vast grasslands, scattered baobabs, and gallery forests that flood during the rainy season. This dynamic ecosystem provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including African buffalo, hippopotamuses, and numerous antelope species such as the waterbuck. Kéran is an important component of a transboundary conservation corridor, allowing for the movement of elephants between Togo and neighboring parks in Benin and Burkina Faso. The riverine areas are particularly rich in birdlife, attracting ornithologists interested in Sudanian savanna species. Despite pressure from surrounding agricultural communities, the park remains a vital stronghold for biodiversity in Togo's semi-arid north and a key site for ecological research.

Getting there

The park located in the north is typically best accessed via the main road heading straight from the city of Kara. Renting a sturdy 4x4 vehicle with a knowledgeable local driver is generally advisable.

Best season

The best time for extensive wildlife and bird watching usually falls squarely in the dry season from December to March. From May onwards, dense vegetation and heavy rains often make tracks hard to pass.

Terrain & paths

The expansive reserve is primarily characterized by wide flat savannas and dense gallery forests along its rivers. Dirt tracks are mostly highly navigable during dry conditions, though often extremely dusty.

What to bring

For keen birdwatchers, reliable binoculars are essential, as is wearing very lightweight clothing in neutral colors. A sun hat, plenty of drinking water, and insect repellent should always be packed.

Parking

Vehicles are typically parked near the official entrance gates or right next to the park's administrative buildings. During a safari, you naturally remain in the vehicle and only park in designated areas.

Leaving your vehicle while inside the park boundaries is typically only considered safe in explicitly marked zones. Instructions provided by local park rangers must be strictly followed at all times.

For a rewarding safari experience and extensive birdwatching, spending a full day in the park is highly recommended. Shorter drive-throughs take about three hours but offer far fewer chances to spot wildlife.
