Pya lies about 12 kilometres north of Kara in Kozah Prefecture, set within the pretty hilly landscape of Kabyè country. Its importance vastly outweighs its size: this is where Togo's long-serving president Gnassingbé Eyadéma was born in 1937, and where he ruled the country from 1967 until his death in 2005. During his tenure, the village was developed into a political and symbolic centre, gaining modern administrative buildings, a church, a large mausoleum, and the Eyadéma Mausoleum erected after 2005, today a pilgrimage site for supporters of the Gnassingbé family. Yet traditional Kabyè life persists: the hilly fields are still terraced in the old way and planted with yams, millet and sorghum. The annual Evala wrestling competitions also take place in Pya and regularly draw the current president Faure Gnassingbé, who maintains his family bonds here.
