Sansanné-Mango, often shortened to Mango, sits on the right bank of the Oti River in northern Togo and is the capital of Oti Prefecture. The settlement emerged in the 18th century as a base for the feared Anoufom warriors, who controlled slave caravans along the trans-Saharan trade route - the name 'Sansanné' means 'warrior camp' in the local Tem dialect. Today the town of around 50,000 inhabitants is a key crossroads between the Kara and Savanes regions and hosts a lively market famed for trading freshwater fish from the Oti. Its mix of Tchokossi (Anoufom), Mossi and Peulh peoples shapes an animated cultural diversity. The surrounding countryside contains some of the last gallery forests of northern Togo as well as the Galangashie and Oti-Mandouri faunal reserves, where visitors can observe antelopes, hippos and even small populations of forest elephants.
