Bafilo lies between Sokodé and Kara on National Road 1, set among the scenic Alédjo Mountains at roughly 450 metres above sea level. It is the capital of Assoli Prefecture and belongs to the Kara Region. With around 25,000 inhabitants, Bafilo is Togo's most important hub for traditional weaving: the handwoven striped cloths of the Kotokoli, often dyed in vivid indigo, are produced in numerous family workshops here and exported across West Africa. The town is predominantly Muslim, dominated by a striking Grand Mosque at its centre. Geographically, Bafilo is famous for the dramatic Alédjo Fault (Faille d'Alédjo), a geological gorge through which the main road passes via a narrow cleft in the rock. Natural springs around the town are regarded as healing baths and are intensively used by the local population. Mango and cashew cultivation are also becoming increasingly important to the regional economy.
