Shurab Coal Mine (Tajikistan)

Weather…

The Shurab coal mine, located near Isfara in Sughd Province, is Tajikistan's oldest coal mining facility. Extraction of its brown coal deposits began in the early 20th century and reached its peak during the Soviet era, when Shurab was famously known as the 'Coal Chamber of the Fergana Valley.' The mine features deep shafts that descend up to 500 meters underground. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, production plummeted, leading to Shurab becoming somewhat of a 'ghost town,' although mining has persisted on a smaller scale. In recent years, there have been renewed efforts to modernize the mine through foreign investment, aiming to supply coal for local thermal power plants and cement factories. Despite challenging working conditions, the mine remains a vital local employer and a strategic energy reserve for the northern part of the country.
