Isfara sits in the easternmost corner of Sughd Province, on the Kyrgyz border in the Fergana Valley, and ranks among Tajikistan’s oldest settlements. The town of about 50,000 inhabitants has more than 2,000 years of recorded history and was an important caravan trade hub between Kokand and Andijan in medieval times. Today it is best known for apricot cultivation: high-quality sun-dried apricots are exported to many countries. Oil extraction, cement production, and the chemical industry also shape the local economy. Historic landmarks include the 16th-century Abdullo Khan Madrasa and the Khoja Mahmud Mausoleum. Because of its sensitive location amid a patchwork of Kyrgyz and Tajik enclaves, the region experiences recurring tensions, making the town a geopolitically delicate node in the country’s north.
