Istaravshan, formerly Uroteppa and in antiquity known as Cyropolis, is, with around 2,500 years of history, one of the most venerable cities in Tajikistan. It sits on the northern slope of the Turkestan Range at roughly 1,000 metres and has about 70,000 inhabitants. The city was a key node on the Silk Road and a stronghold that Alexander the Great captured only after hard fighting in 329 BC. Its skyline is still defined by the partially restored Mug Teppe fortress, the Hazrat-i-Shoh mausoleum, and a wealth of caravanserais, mosques, and madrasas. Istaravshan is equally famous for its craftsmanship: hand-forged knives, intricate wood carving, and richly embroidered textiles. In spring, blossoming apricot and almond orchards turn the surrounding slopes into a colourful mosaic, drawing growing numbers of cultural travellers.
