Ghafurov is a direct satellite of Khujand and one of the most important transport hubs in northern Tajikistan. With nearly 30,000 inhabitants it has grown out of the old village of Sovetabad and was renamed in 1978 after the historian Bobojon Ghafurov, whose work “The Tajiks” remains the standard reference on Tajik national history. The town hosts one of the country’s largest railway stations, where the lines coming from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Sughd Province converge. Beyond rail, machine building, food processing, and logistics centres define the local economy. Several major educational institutions, including a campus of the Tajik Technical University’s polytechnic faculty, train new specialists for industry here. The fertile Fergana Valley, with its sprawling apricot orchards and rice fields, begins right at the city’s edge.
