Shaydon is the administrative centre of the Asht District in the far north-east of Tajikistan, tucked into one of the northernmost arms of the Fergana Valley near the Uzbek border. The small town of around 17,000 sits at about 1,200 metres and is the focal point of a region best known for its apricot, almond, and walnut orchards. The produce is processed in regional drying and packing workshops and sold as the “Asht apricot,” a brand prized across Central Asia for its sweet aromatic flavour. Besides agriculture, mining, especially of tungsten, antimony, and mercury, and livestock breeding shape the local economy. Tourist highlights include the salt grottoes of Aksu and the dramatic Mogol-Tau range nearby. Shaydon also serves as a way-station on the route to the Kairakkum reservoir.
