Lying in the far north of Tajikistan at the southern entrance of the Fergana Valley, Khujand is one of Central Asia’s oldest cities, with over 2,500 years of recorded history. Alexander the Great founded his easternmost fortress Alexandria Eschate here on the Syr Darya in 329 BC. Today the city, home to roughly 180,000 inhabitants, is the economic heart of Sughd Province and Tajikistan’s second-largest urban centre. Its landmark is the monumental Panjshanbe Bazaar, whose pastel-blue dome shelters one of the largest covered markets in Central Asia. The historic citadel walls, the Khujand History Museum, and the Sheikh Muslihiddin Mosque and Mausoleum on the main square round out its civic core. Textiles, food processing, and silk are the dominant industries, while its position at the foot of the mountain passes makes Khujand a strategic transport hub between Uzbekistan and the Tajik capital.
