Kayrakkum Hydroelectric Power Plant (Tajikistan)

Weather…

The Kayrakkum Hydroelectric Power Plant is situated on the Syr Darya river near the city of Guliston in Sughd Province. Commissioned in 1956, the facility serves a critical dual purpose: power generation and irrigation management. With an original installed capacity of 126 megawatts, it remains the most vital energy source for northern Tajikistan. Its reservoir, frequently referred to as the 'Tajik Sea,' provides essential irrigation water for agricultural lands in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. Due to the aging of its infrastructure, the plant is currently undergoing a massive modernization program supported by the EBRD, aiming to increase its capacity to 174 megawatts. The rehabilitation is expected to extend the plant's operational life by another 35 years and significantly enhance generation efficiency while addressing climate change resilience.
