Buston, formerly known as Chkalovsk, lies in northern Tajikistan in Sughd Province, just a few kilometres west of Khujand. During the Soviet era it was a so-called “closed city” and a hub for uranium processing in support of the Soviet nuclear programme. Vast amounts of uranium ore extracted from the mines of the Fergana Valley were enriched here, making the town both a strategic secret and a region marked by significant environmental contamination. After independence Chkalovsk was renamed Buston, meaning “garden,” and the city has been working toward a civilian rebirth: clean-up programmes are addressing former tailings piles, new residential districts are rising, and the food and textile industries are growing. With around 40,000 inhabitants, Buston now forms a continuous urban area together with Ghafurov and Khujand and hosts research institutes specialising in radiation safety and industrial modernisation.
