Gharm lies in the heart of the Rasht Valley at the confluence of the Surkhob and Vakhsh rivers and is the historical and cultural centre of this remote, mountain-ringed valley. Most of the roughly 8,000 inhabitants belong to the Gharmi-speaking branch of Tajiks, a group with its own dialect and a strong regional identity. The region was a stronghold of the United Tajik Opposition during the 1990s civil war, and as a result it remains economically less developed than other parts of the country. Culturally, however, it is rich, with traditional teppteppa dances, wrestling tournaments, and embroidery. Gharm serves as the gateway for treks into the high Pamir-Alay, to Lake Sarez, or up the Obichingou Valley. A pleasant summer climate, fertile valley floors, and dramatic peaks make the area an increasingly popular trekking destination.
