Konibodom lies in Tajikistan’s far north-east, in the fertile Fergana Valley, and is traditionally celebrated as the “city of almonds.” Its name comes from the Persian “kani-bodom,” meaning “almond mine,” a nod to the extensive almond, apricot, and peach orchards that surround the town. With about 50,000 inhabitants, it serves as an important agricultural hub for Sughd Province, while modern dried-fruit and canning plants are also expanding. Historically Konibodom was a caravan crossroads; the town still features 16th- to 19th-century monuments such as the Khoja Roshnoi Madrasa and the Mir Rajab Dodho Mosque. Just outside lies the Kairakkum Reservoir, dubbed the “Tajik Sea,” a popular recreational destination. Konibodom is equally renowned for its traditional wedding music and for producing the finest variety of Tajik almonds.
