Khujand Fortress (Tajikistan)

Weather…

Khujand Fortress is the historical heart of one of Central Asia's oldest cities, boasting a history spanning over 2,500 years. Originally founded in the 6th or 5th century BC, it was rebuilt and expanded by Alexander the Great in 329 BC as Alexandria Eschate ("Alexandria the Furthest"). The fortress served as a crucial defensive bulwark at the entrance to the Fergana Valley, protecting the city from nomadic incursions from the northern steppes. In 1220, after a heroic defense led by Timur Malik, the stronghold was largely destroyed by Genghis Khan's forces. In subsequent centuries, it was rebuilt and reinforced multiple times, with current structures mostly dating from the Samanid period and later khanates. In 1999, a portion of the fortress was faithfully reconstructed to house the Historical Museum of Sughd Region. The monumental complex with its iconic towers is now a landmark of Khujand and a symbol of the enduring nature of Tajik culture.
