Kokand sits in the western Fergana Valley and from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century served as the capital of the mighty Khanate of Kokand, which at its peak ruled over large parts of today's Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and southern Kazakhstan. At that time the city was one of Central Asia's most important religious and cultural centres, boasting more than 600 mosques. The lavish Khudoyar Khan Palace with its seven courtyards and intricate decoration still bears witness to that golden age. Also popular are the Dakhma-i-Shokhon mausolea and the Jami Mosque. With around 250,000 inhabitants, modern Kokand is a regional industrial centre with fertiliser and machine-building plants. In late summer the city hosts a traditional crafts festival where silk weavers, potters, and wood carvers showcase their work.
