The ruins of Bunjikat, located in the Shahriston district, were once the thriving capital of Ustrushana, a significant early medieval state in Central Asia. The city reached its peak between the 5th and 9th centuries AD and was renowned for the massive palace of its local rulers, known as the Afshins. Bunjikat was a major cultural center, famous for its extraordinary wall paintings that depict mythological scenes, intricate religious rituals, and the refined life of the elite court. Archaeological excavations have revealed a complex urban layout featuring strong fortifications, well-defined residential districts, and specialized workshops for high-quality metalwork and ceramics. Situated along vital trade routes, the city benefited from the continuous exchange of goods and ideas between China and the West during the first millennium. A particularly famous find is the "She-wolf" fresco, which bears a striking resemblance to the Roman legend of Romulus and Remus, indicating wide-reaching cultural connections across Eurasia. Following the Arab conquest, the city gradually lost its prominence, but it remains a key site for studying Tajikistan's rich pre-Islamic historical and artistic heritage today.
