Guliston, whose name means 'rose garden' in Persian, is the capital of Sirdaryo Province in central Uzbekistan. The city lies on the south-western edge of the once-barren Hungry Steppe, which Soviet-era irrigation projects turned into vast cotton and grain fields. With around 90,000 residents, Guliston is one of the country's younger administrative centres, having received city status only in 1971. The economy is dominated by food processing, cotton ginning, agricultural-machinery manufacture, and fertiliser production. The nearby Syr Darya main line is one of the most important rail links between Tashkent and Samarkand. The city is home to Guliston State University, which specialises in agricultural sciences. Architecturally, Guliston feels functional and quiet, with wide avenues and Soviet-style residential blocks.
