Aarburg is located in the Zofingen district of the Canton of Aargau, at a strategically significant narrows of the Aare river. The municipality's history is inextricably linked to the Aarburg Fortress, which perches on a steep rocky ridge and was mentioned as early as the 12th century as a castle of the Frohburg family. In the 17th century, the Bernese expanded the complex into a massive artillery fortress to control the vital North-South connection. Today, the fortress serves as a youth center and is a national heritage site. The small town itself nestles at the foot of the fortress rock and possesses a well-preserved historic core. A unique natural phenomenon is the so-called Aarewaage directly below the fortress, a large water vortex where the water appears to flow upstream. For centuries, Aarburg was an important hub for timber rafting and shipping on the Aare. In the modern era, the town benefited from its location at the Wiggertal motorway junction and its proximity to the Olten railway hub, making it an attractive business location. Beside the fortress, the architecture is characterized by the neo-Gothic Reformed church, which also stands prominently on the rock. Culturally, Aarburg gives various museums and is known for the annual Riverside Open Air festival, which draws thousands of visitors to the historic riverside setting.
