Rheinfelden is located on the High Rhine in the northwest of the Canton of Aargau, directly on the German border. The town features a glorious history and is considered the oldest Zähringer town in Switzerland. It was founded in the 12th century by Duke Konrad of Zähringen, though the first documentary mention dates back to around 851. The well-preserved, heritage-protected old town with its narrow alleys and magnificent townhouses bears witness to its former significance as a Habsburg fortress. An economic landmark of national importance is the Feldschlösschen brewery, housed in a castle-like building and ranked as one of the largest breweries in Switzerland. Besides beer, Rheinfelden is globally renowned for its salt deposits. Since the 19th century, brine has been used for therapeutic purposes, establishing the town as a major spa and wellness destination. The modern Sole uno wellness center attracts thousands of visitors annually. Together with its German namesake on the opposite bank of the Rhine, Rheinfelden forms a cross-border living space connected by several bridges. Its riverside location also provides diverse leisure opportunities, from boat trips to hiking trails along the banks of the Rhine.
