Dorneck Castle Ruins
The ruins of Dorneck Castle tower above Dornach in the Canton of Solothurn and are deeply intertwined with Swiss national history. The initial structure likely dates to the 11th century and was granted as a fief to the Lords of Efringen by the Habsburgs in the 14th century. The site achieved worldwide fame due to the Battle of Dornach in 1499, the final decisive engagement of the Swabian War. Following the Confederate victory, the castle came into the permanent possession of Solothurn in 1502 and was expanded into a formidable fortress. In 1798, French troops took the castle without a fight, after which it was used as a quarry and fell into decay. The remaining walls still convey the strength of the former fortification. The ruins offer an impressive view over the Birs Valley and the Basel region, making it a valued historical excursion site.
