Laufenburg Castle Ruins (Switzerland)

Weather…

The ruins of Laufenburg Castle rise on a hill above the town of the same name on the High Rhine in the Canton of Aargau. Built in the late 12th century by the Habsburgs, it was the administrative center of the Habsburg-Laufenburg branch. The castle’s purpose was to monitor the Rhine and control the crucial crossing point near the rapids known as the 'Laufen.' During the Thirty Years' War, the fortress was besieged multiple times and suffered heavy damage. Following the extinction of the Laufenburg line and the chaos of the Napoleonic Wars, the castle was abandoned in the early 19th century and used as building material for the town below. Today, impressive wall remnants and the keep remain, the latter serving as an observation platform. The ruins symbolize the former division and modern connection of the twin towns of Laufenburg on both sides of the border.
