Habsburg Castle
Habsburg Castle in the Canton of Aargau is the ancestral seat of one of the most powerful dynasties in world history. Founded around 1020 by Radbot of Klettgau, it served as the starting point for the Habsburgs' rise to imperial global power. The complex originally consisted of a double castle, of which the imposing 'Rear Castle' with its keep and palas remains today. Archaeological excavations attest to the strategic importance of the site atop the Wülpelsberg, offering a wide view over the Aare Valley. After the center of power shifted to Austria, the castle lost its political significance but remained a central symbol of identity. The preserved walls vividly convey the lifestyle of the lesser nobility during the High Middle Ages. Today, Habsburg is a protected cultural monument and houses a permanent exhibition on family history.
