Biberist Paper Mill (Switzerland)

Weather…

The Biberist Paper Mill in the Canton of Solothurn was a central pillar of the Swiss paper industry for over 150 years. Founded in 1862, the company rapidly developed into one of Europe's leading producers of graphic papers. The extensive industrial site operated high-performance machinery that achieved an annual capacity of up to 500,000 tons of coated paper. Despite significant investments in modernizing the facilities, global competitive pressure and declining demand forced the owner, Sappi, to close the plant in 2011. This step resulted in the loss of approximately 550 jobs and marked a turning point in regional economic history. Since its decommissioning, the site has been gradually transformed into a multifunctional business park known as Papieri Biberist. Today, the area accommodates a variety of smaller companies and service providers, while parts of the historical industrial architecture are preserved for future generations.
