Alt-Falkenstein Castle Ruins (Switzerland)

Weather…

The ruins of Alt-Falkenstein Castle are located at the entrance to the Klus pass in Balsthal, Canton of Solothurn, and are inseparable from the history of Jura pass control. Founded around 1100, it served as the ancestral seat of the Barons of Falkenstein before they built the more modern Neu-Falkenstein Castle. The fortress was designed to monitor and control all goods moving through the narrow gorge. In 1402, the castle was taken over by the city of Solothurn and later used as a chaplain's residence and a museum, which contributed to its comparatively good state of preservation. Today, it houses the Thal Local History Museum, featuring an impressive collection of regional antiquities and fossils. Its striking position on the rocky ridge makes Alt-Falkenstein a landmark of the region, offering significant historical and geological interest.
