Muri is located in the upper Freiamt in the southeast of the canton of Aargau. The village landscape is heavily shaped by the Muri Abbey complex, founded in 1027 by the Habsburgs. Muri Abbey was a spiritual and cultural center of the region for centuries until it was dissolved in 1841 during the Aargau monastery dispute. The magnificent St. Martin's Abbey Church, with its five organs and octagonal central building, is considered a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The abbey is particularly historically significant as the burial site of the early Habsburgs; the Loreto Chapel holds the hearts of the last Austrian imperial couple, Karl I and Zita. Today, the complex houses the Museum Muri and serves as a venue for high-profile concerts. Beyond its history, Muri is a modern regional center with a well-developed infrastructure and diverse businesses. The municipality is situated in a rolling hilly landscape good for hiking and cycling. The economy is characterized by service companies and smaller industrial enterprises. Muri also functions as an important educational hub for the surrounding villages and features a regional hospital. Excellent transport links to Zurich, Zug, and Lucerne make Muri attractive for commuters.
